Crushed by the Rox

Finally, the Braves prove that they can also lose in a good, old-fashioned beat down. Chucky gave up 6. Is anyone surprised? Resop gave up 5. Is anyone surprised? Please tell me this means that we can finally stop hearing about 1-run games. Please?

Short Recap for Short Game

What was that game, like 15 minutes? Tonight’s game at Coors Field was the shortest full game ever there, according to the radio folks. This time Glavine was spectacular and deserved the W that the bullpen blew for him.

Kotsay’s Got a Gun

Atlanta 3, New York Mets 1. The game ended up living up to its pitcher’s duel billing. Smoltz threw five, two hits, no earned runs. Santana threw 7 strong, giving up only 1 run, but he proved to be mortal which will be psychologically important as the year rolls on. Smoltz was padding his big [...]

Remember the Maine

Atlanta 11, New York Mets 5. By the time this blowout was over, John Maine’s forgettable start (4 innings, 4 runs) for the Mets was pretty much forgotten. But as the season wears on, I think we’ll see how important starting pitching depth is going to be in NL East race, and even with Hampton [...]

Hampton Pulled, Shaun Humbled, Braves Lose, Weather Sucked

We get to see the pitchers do their long tossing in right field a few minutes before the start of the game. Hampton came out, did his long tossing and went back into the bullpen. They even announced him as the starting pitcher. We’ll see what the prognosis is tomorrow.
Pittsburgh 4, Atlanta 3 (10 innings.) [...]

More Like It

Atlanta 10, Pittsburgh 2. This was the sort of quick, definitive win we were hoping to see after the game on Monday night. Jair Jurrjens was very impressive through the first five, K-ing 5 and keeping all the Pirates’ hitters off balance, but he unraveled quickly in the 6th. The bullpen was much better tonight [...]

Notes on the Ugly

Pittsburgh 12, Atlanta 11 (12 innings). It’s a good thing we had an off day today because last night was exhausting. Two games in and it’s been a crazy season already. Let’s not mince words: last night was ugly. Ugly pitching. Ugly fielding. Ugly coaching.

I know it was supposed to be a great story line [...]

Rain for the Win!

Atlanta 5, Cleveland 4. Mike Hampton haters were shut up for the final time this spring. Hampton pitched 3 strong innings, giving up only one run. His pitch count was very impressive: 41 pitches, 31 strikes. He fooled a lot of guys in the 1st and 3rd, but the Tribe was able to string together [...]

Friday Night Highlights from Section 435

Cleveland 7, Atlanta 1. It was great to be back at Turner Field last night for the exhibition game against Cleveland. A little chilly in the upper decks, but that’s typical for early spring. I was excited to get a chance to see Jair Jurrjens live and in person, but it was not a great [...]
