Who’ll Stop the Rain? Campillo!
Atlanta 6, New York Mets 2. Game 2. After completing our sweep of the Mets from the first series of the season in the first game, we completed our sweep of the Mets in the doubleheader in the second game. Quick hits from the nightcap:
- The game didn’t start until almost 9pm due to a rain delay. They put the tarp on the field at 7pm, well before it started raining. So, after an hour of solid rain, they took the tarp off the field, and the first thing they did was bring out the hose to wet down the infield.
- Jorge Campillo was more than solid; he was fantastic. He no-hit the Mets through 3, didn’t give up a run, walked nobody, and struck out 7. He was very efficient, throwing only about 80. Right now, one strong performance is all it’s going to take from anybody to earn The Chuck James Experiment’s spot in the rotation. This was Campillo’s second start in the bigs, however he was a successful starter for several years in the Mexican league:
His only other start came on Aug. 2, 2005, when he lasted just one inning for the Mariners because of a right sore elbow. This was the first sign that he needed Tommy John elbow ligament replacement surgery, a procedure that would force him to miss a majority of the 2006 season.
- Frenchy’s streak came to an end.
- Your Mark Kotsay of the Game is Mark Kotsay who came in off the bench in the 8th for the double switch and did nothing but hit a 2-run home run in his one at bat.
- In slumping Braves news, KJ hit a 2-run triple, Tex got an RBI single, and Matt Diaz put up an 0-fer, leaving 7 men on base.
