Two-for-One Reds’ Series Update
I’ve been clobbered by the pollen for the last couple of days, so I’m going to take care of the rest of the series in a single post.
Saturday’s Game
Atlanta 9, Cincinnati 1. Things worth noting:
- Jo-Jo Reyes was excellent through 5 but he abruptly lost his command in the 6th. I think pulling him was both a good move for the game and also for Reyes’ mental health.
- The Braves have been putting the infield shift on for both Griffey and Adam Dunn. Dunn hit into a 4-5-3 double play. That’s one you don’t see very often.
- The Braves’ seventh was exactly the kind of inning we need to see more of. Instead of everyone swinging for the fences, everyone was just trying to put the ball in play. We found some holes, strung together some singles and doubles, and batted around for 6 runs.
- Another strong performance from the bullpen. The eight run lead was enough padding that Bobby felt confidence in putting Chris Resop in for the 9th inning.
Sunday’s Game
Atlanta 14, Cincinnati 7. The Braves ended up scoring more times than the Hawks did today, though this game was no less ugly, I’m sure.
The Good
- The offense once again was doing it right today, putting the ball in play, string hits together, rather than trying to put everything over the fence.
- Mark Kotsay and Kelly Johnson are both getting hot. KJ had approximately 42 doubles this series.
- Royce Ring got the win by throwing a pitch.
The Bad
- Glavine’s performance was…. shaky. Don’t think there’s any reason for concern. He is an old man, after all. He can’t be money every day.
- Yunel was an absolute last minute scratch. Apparently he wasn’t feeling well. Though, he did come in later in the game.
The Ugly
- The Reds’ pitching was awful. Bronson Arroyo didn’t make it out of the second. Their bullpen was no more effective.
- Junior threw up an 0-fer today and went 1-13 for the series.
