Smoltz 3K Day
Washington 6, Atlanta 0. Smoltz had another special day, worthy of the elite milestone that he achieved. He only needed 4 strikeouts to reach 3,000, but he ended up with 10 in 7 innings. He gave up only 1 earned run.
Unfortunately, Smoltz was outdueled by John Lannan, who was outstanding. He was a completely different player than the fellow we saw in D.C. two weekends ago. He was very efficient, pitching to contact. We didn’t hit anything hard all night. Hats off to Lannan. He gave the same kind of grief to Mets in his last start. Maybe this kid’s got something.
We would have had the opportunity to lose another one run game, but Jorge Campillo’s throwing error in the top of the ninth, on what should have been an inning ending double play, gave the Nats the opportunity to blow the game wide open. They ended up scoring 5 runs.
What is of particular concern is all the errors we’ve made over the last few games. They haven’t come back to haunt us until tonight, but you can’t expect to make two errors a game and keep winning for very long. We’ve had 8 in the last 6 six games.
