Remember the Maine
Atlanta 11, New York Mets 5. By the time this blowout was over, John Maine’s forgettable start (4 innings, 4 runs) for the Mets was pretty much forgotten. But as the season wears on, I think we’ll see how important starting pitching depth is going to be in NL East race, and even with Hampton out, we still have the edge in that department.
When you’re in the stands, you’re not quite as informed as you would be when watching a game on TV or listening in the radio. You don’t have the advantage of multiple angles and slow motion replays. This was apparent on the play in the 5th inning in which Kotsay apparently made another fabulous diving catch and doubled up Jose Reyes to get Hudson out of a bases loaded jam. DP 8-2-4 flashed up on the screen, the Braves headed off the field, and the crowd went wild. But when Willie Randolph came out to argue, we had no idea what he was arguing about. Only when they displayed the new scoring of 1BRBI did we know that he was arguing the catch in center, not anything that came after. Of course, they’re not allowed to replay close calls on the big screen, so we were left to our partisan booing.
Former Brave Jorge Sosa began the seventh by throwing one pitch and then complaining about the conditions on the mound. The game was held up for several minutes while the grounds crew came out to put some new, dry dirt on the mound for him. Long story short, the housekeeping was not enough as he loaded the bases then let Kelly Johnson clean them up with a pinch hit grand slam. Karma for messing with the grounds crew, I’m sure.
Latest word is that we will get Santana vs. Smoltz in the series finale tomorrow.
