Friday Night Highlights from Section 435

Cleveland 7, Atlanta 1. It was great to be back at Turner Field last night for the exhibition game against Cleveland. A little chilly in the upper decks, but that’s typical for early spring. I was excited to get a chance to see Jair Jurrjens live and in person, but it was not a great night for him. While he only gave up two runs in 3+, he was very inefficient, threw a lot of pitches. Still, I expect to see good things from him as the season rolls on.

Highlights (and lowlights) from Friday night:

  • Mark Kotsay provided the Braves only offense, two singles, scoring their only run. He also made a great diving catch in center. He definitely lived up to his reputation as a gritty guy in the field, though it’s a little nerve-wracking watching him crash into walls and dive for balls after his back troubles from last year. He definitely does not get the same kind of jump on the balls that Andruw did, but he took care of business last night.
  • Blaine Boyer and Jeff Ridgway both looked as bad as their lines for the night, but the rest of the bullpen was solid.
  • Joe Borchard almost went yard in the bottom of the ninth, but it was caught on the warning track in straight away center to end the game. He’s on the road to Richmond, now.

Off to watch Mike Hampton start on today’s final exhibition game. Can’t help but worry every time he toes the rubber. And I’m a Mike Hampton believer. Despite proving their health this spring, between him and Kotsay, I think I’ll be hitting the Pepto bottle pretty hard this afternoon.
